The kitchen is the heart of American homes. Everything from homework to games to cocktailing to cooking happens in this room. Therefore, its lighting design should give the kitchen an even light level that also includes a design element.
Let’s break it down for you.
Ambient: This will be the main source of light and should be cast as evenly as possible. We recommend accomplishing this with a combination of 2” downlights around the perimeter of your kitchen, and pendants in the center. For kitchens with a kitchen table, you can add a chandelier over the table.

Task: While ambient lighting gives you a nice general light, it often leaves shadows in areas that require more focus. With the help of task lighting, work surfaces, and cabinetry are properly illuminated so you can safely prepare meals, read recipes, and easily spot ingredients on the shelf or counter. Common kitchen task lighting options include LED strip lights and puck lights.
